La Carrasquilla riverbed runs near Los Belones and empties into the Mar Menor, close to the towns of Los Nietos and Islas Menores, all of which belong to the municipality of Cartagena in the Region of Murcia. The section subject to restoration goes from where the riverbed exits the area of the “Manga Club Golf Resort” up to where it empties into the Mar Menor, and its length a bit over 5 km.

In order to achieve the goals of the National River Restoration Strategy, the Carrasquilla riverbed restoration project aims at improving its ecological conditions, currently degraded due mainly to heavy human intervention: solid waste disposal (trash, rubble, etc.), introduction of non-native species, invasion in certain sections of the river course, and use of the riverbed by motor vehicles at crosspoints as well as along certain stretches.
