The project comprises the section of the Segura River between Cañaverosa and Abarán (approximately 54 km), and the final section of the Benamor River up to the confluence with the Segura River.
The scope of the project includes some of the areas within the Natura 2000 Network. Six of the nine dams corresponding to the project are located in the SAC ‘Sierras y Vega Alta del Segura y ríos Alhárabe y Moratalla’ (ES6200004 – the mountains and upper alluvial plain of the Segura River and the Alhárabe and Moratalla rivers), and three of them are also included in the SPA ‘Sierra del Molino, Embalse del Quípar y Llanos del Cagitán’ (ES0000265 – the Molino mountains, Quípar reservoir and Cagitán alluvial plains) (see Table 1 and location map). There are also two areas belonging to the Region of Murcia Nature Reserve Network established by Land Planning Act 4/1992: the ‘Cañaverosa River Groves and Forest Nature Reserve’ (Moratalla-Calasparra), and the ‘Almadenes Canyon Nature Reserve’ (Calasparra-Cieza).
